Scottish Culture and Traditional Arts

Support the Future of Scottish Culture – Help Start a New Bagpipe Band for San Francisco’s Youth

The St. Andrew’s Society Foundation is committed to expanding access to Scottish heritage through meaningful cultural programs. Thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from the Dan Reid Memorial Fund, we are launching an exciting new initiative: creating a youth bagpipe band for underserved children in San Francisco. This project will introduce local youth to the rich tradition of Scottish piping, fostering cultural pride, discipline, and community engagement through music.

This band will provide instruments, lessons, and mentorship to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to explore Scottish music. The program also aims to connect students with the wider Scottish community and become the premiere band for San Francisco through performances and events, helping them build a lasting connection to a heritage that has shaped cultures around the globe.

Investing in the Next Generation

Supporting the Next Generation of Pipers

The St Andrews Society Foundation's support of Brian Cooper and the Prince Charles Pipe Band has been instrumental in sustaining the band's legacy of educating youth groups in the Bay Area. With a commitment to nurturing young talent and offering a rewarding learning experience, the band has thrived for over half a century. This enduring magic, fueled by dedicated students and world-class instructors, reflects the values and principles that the foundation's funding has helped preserve.

Dan Reid Memorial Competition

Dan Reid Memorial Solo Piping Challenge - Cameron Gillies Competition

The St Andrew's Society Foundation was pivotal in preserving the legacy of the Dr. Dan Reid Memorial Solo Piping Challenge-Recital in San Francisco. This extraordinary competition, from 1992 to 2013, showcased top piping talents and fostered an appreciation for Scottish music. As part of their efforts, the Foundation updated the competition's music library and distributed it to piping institutions, ensuring accessibility to these valuable recordings for the public. The Dan Reid Memorial not only provided a platform for elite pipers but also inspired the next generation, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among professional pipers. While the event's impact remains unmatched, the Foundation's dedication to preserving its memory serves as a testament to its commitment to Scottish culture and music in California.

The Dr. Dan Reid Memorial in 1992 set out to create a prestigious showcase of the world’s top solo piping talent by placing performers before a ritzy, mostly black-tie San Francisco audience. In a departure from the traditional MSR and Piobaireachd events, contestants had to deliver a sustained 45-minute show that included often obscure pieces selected from a predetermined list created by the organizers. The Dan Reid Memorial included a “Masters” category for elite players and a “Cameron-Gillies” section for “three up-and-coming young contestants” who compete in more straightforward piobaireachd, MSR and 6/8 March events. The competition memorializes a medical doctor who was a member of the San Francisco St. Andrew’s Society who died in a mountain climbing mishap in 1991.

The 21st annual Dr. Dan Reid Memorial Invitational Solo Piping Recital Challenge experienced a change in plans. Some originally selected performers had to depart from the exclusive San Francisco event, emphasising challenging performances rather than traditional competition.

Among the initially invited pipers, Andrew Hayes and Ian K. MacDonald were the ones able to participate in the 2012 Dan Reid Memorial. While several others were considered potential participants, they could not confirm their availability for the event.
